Layouts due to appear:
- Walker's Ridge ,
This working diorama was built by Brian in memory of Captain W (Bill) Walker R.F.A. (retired), who passed away in October 2002. Like Brian, Bill is sadly missed by all his friends at the Barry and Penarth Model Railway Club, where he was a founder member many years ago.
Before his death, Brian donated this layout, which depicts a typical 'short line' on the US-Canadian border, to the club. A new board has been created to extend the layout, by creating a 'wye' (a reversing triangle), so common on such lines, but rarely portrayed in model form.
SCHARPS Park , Brian Scoulding's last layout, built in the Summer before he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The layout features Southern EMUs in a 'might-have-been' preservation line somewhere SouthWest of London. In addition to an original Triang EMU, Brian built other Southern EMUs and coaching stock from kits or by modifying proprietary coaches. A feature of the layout is the set of working vintage Hornby Dublo signals. The present owner has extended the fiddle yard and mixes Brian's vintage stock with current offerings from Hornby.
- The Lavernock Light Railway: A ficticious narrow gauge layout in 7 mm/ft scale (On3 gauge). An old favorite, which was last seen in the Paget Rooms in 2003. This was made by Brian over 20 years ago, such that all the locos are named after Brian's grandchildren. This was the excuse for Brian to join the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association. The layout and most of the original stock has recently changed hands again and is now in the ownership of a club member.
- Strathcona. One of Brian's more recent creations, this depicts an imaginary town in the Canadian prairies, close to a big city, Strathcona has extensive grain traffic serving the local silos, together with general freight and a limited passenger service. The period is set in the late 1950's, with mainly Canadian Pacific diesels in action.
The layout now resides in Bolton and thus will probably be the furthest travelled of the layouts.
- Helstow . A portable OO gauge layout built by Brian many years ago, depicting an imaginary sea-side terminous in the West Country, where the Southern and Great Western Railways meet. The layout will run with DCC operation including steam sound. Look out for the 'spam-can' with its single coach from London - typical of the Atlantic Coast Express in the 1950's, which terminated at Padstow.
- West Church a small 'N' Gauge layout exhibited by members of the Loddon Vale Model Railway Club. Brian was a member of this club in his younger days living in the Reading area.
- Avalon Brick Works (0-16.5), displayed by Howard Martin, Chairman of the 7mm Narrow Gauge Association. Brian was a member of this Association for many years and was its Archivist during the 1990's.
This layout was originally built by Julian Andrews of Wedmore as an experiment to show how small you could make an 0-16.5 gauge layout. and was featured in the July 1999 edition of Railway Modeller. The scale is 7 mm = 1 ft using 16.5 mm gauge to represent a track gauge of between 2 ft - 2 ft 6 ins. The overall size is 34" x 16". The line was built to serve the fictitious brickworks which uses a source of fine clay under the peat on the Somerset Levels near Glastonbury as one of its raw materials. The company has always struggled, hence the overgrown nature of the track. There is some hope for the future as the area where the clay and peat was extracted is an area very popular with wild birds. The' 'Twitchers' will pay lots of cash to be taken to the wetlands, as there is no road access.
- Tatchester , a GWR branch terminous in OO-gauge, recently acquired by Steve D., which serves as a suitable backdrop for his extensive collection of GWR railcars. A miniature camera mounted in a guards van allows a drivers view of the layout.
- Porthiain. This O-gauge layout was built by a former club member, Dave Cannon, who tragically died of cancer at a young age shortly after this single board was completed. The layout has been completely refurbished with new scenics, automatic couplings and motorised points. It operates as a shunting puzzle layout and you can test your own skills, re-sorting the six wagons with a little four wheel diesel shunter.
- Sip & Switch, a new American HO shunting puzzle layout, built by Keith J., a new club member from near Lydney. Again this is an opportunity to try your hand at rearranging a set of freight cars to service four local firms.
- Dibley on Sea, another creation from Dave W. This takes the form of a sea-side branch terminous in BR days and was seen last year for the first time. Dave will be showing his latest paintings as well.
- Fullerton Central Guest layout from Pontypridd MRC, who will also be bringing their Thomas layout to interest the younger visitors.
Demonstrations:
- Brian Bunce showing scratch building locos in O-gauge;
- Members of Diesel and Electric Modellers United (DEMU) will demonstrate DCC (Digital Comand Control)
- Avalon Line Models -7 mm Narrow Gauge
The Avalon Line cast resin kits are a range of locos and rolling stock cast resin kits for 7mm scale narrow gauge. Steam and diesel loco's are available for 9 mm gauge (representing 15" gauge) and 16.5 mm gauge (representing 2'- 2' 6" gauges). All are designed to fit proprietary chassis with little or no modification. If there are any questions about the range or how to model 'Minimum Gauge' lines in 7mm scale the please do not hesitate to ask.
Preservation Groups include the the Talyllyn Railway
Traders include Lord & Butler, P & H MODELS & Rickocraft
In addition, club member David Dacey will be selling some of his Dapol limited edition South Wales private owner coal wagons, as well as the club's own wagons.
Finally, the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association will be in attendance during the day and will be pleased to answer questions about this dissabling and fatal illness for which at present there is no cure.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to the MND Assocation
